Making Homemade Deodorant

Making Homemade Deodorant - The Ultimate Guide

I’ve been interested in making homemade deodorant for a while.  Have you?

Having breast cancer run in my family is one main reason that making homemade deodorant seems like a good idea.  I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist but putting that much chemical on my armpits everyday and chemically clogging and controlling my sweat glands just doesn’t seem like a good idea when you think about it rationally…. you know?  Obviously scientists haven’t made any strong connections between health problems and deodorant use, by why risk it?  Making homemade deodorant is easy and cheap!  Read on to learn more.

In this post I’m not going to give you “my” recipe as I’m not there yet.  I’m still in the research phase…. and I thought maybe you might be as well.  I’m starting by checking out everyone ELSE’s recipes and deciding where I want to start.  From what I’ve learned so far, making homemade deodorant is a lot of trial and error and you might need to try different recipes before you find what works specifically for your body.  So… without further ado, here’s some of the supplies you’ll need and some of the top recipes I found around the web.

This post – was written by a personal friend of mine and she swears by this recipe.  This will be the first one that I try.  She leaves out corn starch for various good reasons.

I love the blog Frugally Sustainable and this recipe for Hormone Balancing Deodorant – is something I really want to try.  It also makes a solid stick, which would be really convenient for application.

This post from Scratch Mommy – includes some ingredients I’m not used to seeing but does no include baking soda.  From what I’ve read, baking soda can irritate some people’s skin.

Thank Your Body has a recipe specifically for sensitive pits – .  I’m sure many of you could use this!

Detoxifying deodorant – ?  That sounds like a good idea!

Another baking soda free homemade deodorant – .

This one uses corn starch, which makes me a little nervous, but it’s posted by my girl Jill of The Prairie Homestead – .  I love her.  So, I might just have to try it out.

If sensitive skin is your concern, you might want to check out Mommypotomus’s recipe. –  I find Heather to be a pretty good source of natural living information.

Those are a lot of links to check out, I know.  But each one has its own merits…. if you make your own deodorant, I’d love to hear what you do and what works!  I’ll let you know what I’ve come up with my own recipe.
