Pizza Night Just Got Easier :: Five Little Homesteaders

As my kids get busier and my little urban homestead gets bigger (did I mention that we just added 4 more chickens to our flock!?), I find myself struggling to get a home cooked meal on the table every night.

As a follower of this blog, you know that I promote “from scratch” cooking and making everything myself as much as possible.  However, sometimes I just can’t swing a 100% from scratch meal.  Life gets busy and time gets short.  Recently I was lucky enough to test out the new Recipe Starters from Progresso –|20&k3=post&k4=& and it has given me a new option when I need to whip up a quick meal at home.

Pizza Night with Progresso

I used the Progresso Recipe Starters –|20&k3=post&k4=&  one night when I wanted to make homemade pizza but didn’t want to make the sauce from scratch.  However, the possibilities of how you can use these sauces are endless.  You can use them in your slow cooker, on the stove top or in the oven.  They are very versatile and make creating a home cooked meal easy.  Most recipes require fewer than 6 ingredients and take 30 minutes or less to make.  You can easily integrate items like homemade pizza dough, veggies from the garden or your choice of meat product into any of the recipes.   The best part is that you can STILL have a home cooked meal, even when you don’t have time to make EVERYTHING from scratch.

Pizza Night with Progresso

As I mentioned, I made pizza with two of the sauces.  I used the Fire Roasted tomato to make a delicious cheese pizza for the kids and the Creamy Roasted Garlic to make a caramelized onion and mushroom pizza for me and my husband.  If you’re interested in doing the same, here are my recipes:

Carmalized Onion/ Mushroom Pizza with Creamy Roasted Garlic Recipe Starters

Pizza Crust – homemade or store bought
Progresso Recipe Starters – Creamy Roasted Garlic –|20&k3=post&k4=&
Mozzarella Cheese
1 medium/large onion
1 cup sliced button mushrooms
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp butter
1 tsp sugar

1.  Caramelize the onions.  I’m sure there are lots of ways to do this but this is what I did:

  1. Put the olive oil and butter in a large skillet.  Heat the skillet over medium/medium-high heat.
  2. Add the onions to the pan and cook for 15-20 minutes.  They should turn light to medium brown.
  3. Sprinkle with sugar, stir and continue to cook for 5-10 minutes.

2.  At this point, I added the mushrooms to the pan of caramelized onions and cooked the mushrooms.  (You may need to add a little more olive oil.)  I don’t like to overcook my mushrooms, so I just put them in there for 5-7 minutes.

3.  Once you add the mushrooms, prebake your crust for 6-10 minutes in a 425 degree oven.

4.  Remove crust and spread sauce on.

5.  Add onions and mushrooms.

6.  Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.

7. Place back in the oven and bake for an additional 10-13 minutes.

That’s it!  Easy, right?

Do any of the sauces look particularly good to you?  Which would you like to try?
