American Well - A new weapon against illness :: Five Little Homesteaders

Being sick is the pits.  Being sick in the middle of the night, on the weekend or on a holiday is even worse.

It’s happened to us all and if you have kids, it has probably happened more times than not.  Their fever spikes to over 103 in the middle of the night.  You don’t know what to do…. head to the emergency room?  Wait it out?  It’s always a tough call.  But today, I want to introduce you to another option.  One I plan on utilizing a lot in the future.

American Well – My New Secret Weapon

American Well

Recently I got to try out the site American Well. And I must say, I was incredibly impressed by it.

American Well is an online health service that allows you to video chat, live, with licensed health care professionals.  These professionals can diagnosis, prescribe medicine and refer for lab work, when necessary.  This is all from the comfort of your own home.  Talk about convenient!  And they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Amazing, right?

My Experience with American Well

After logging into the system, you can choose to talk to a doctor (a real, licensed medical doctor) or a nutritionist.  Since I’m not currently experiencing any medical problems or concerns, I chose to talk with a nutritionist.  I’ve been wanting to talk with one about supplements recently and this was the perfect time.

I signed up, logged on and spoke to Cristina.  I must say, she (and the service as a whole) was amazing and easy to use.

Cristina started off by talking to me about supplements in general and that she felt food was a better way to solve health and medical concerns than supplementation.  She talked about eating a whole/real foods diet.  We chatted about probiotics and fermentation and get this….. she talked about healing your gut.  I mean…. right?  This woman was OBVIOUSLY on the right track with me and my readers.  I was impressed with her knowledge and openness.  She was easy to talk to and listened well, which is more than I can say for recent interactions I’ve had with my in-real-life medical professionals lately, but I digress……

In Conclusion

Overall, the aspect of the American Well system that I liked best was that I could handle the whole thing from the comfort of my living room.  My littles were occupied during their nap/quiet time and I was able to talk to a professional about my health concerns.  No more putting off MY needs…. it makes it easy to fit in my own appointments without disrupting everyone else (and without hauling three kids along to do it!).  I was impressed with the knowledge that the professional I spoke with had, her “bedside manner” (if you will), and the simplicity of the system for the user, despite the obvious technology that is required on the backend.  The America Well site is definitely something I will use in the future.

Have I convinced you to give it a try?  Of course I have!  Do you have an health concerns or nutrition questions that you’ve been meaning to discuss with a doctor or nutritionist?  Of course you do!  And I have some good news….

Enroll with the site (FREE) before the end of April and you’ll be eligible for a free nutritionist or doctor visit.  Just use the coupon code SPRING.  Better yet, this coupon code is good for up to a year BUT you have to enroll to be eligible to use it.  Enroll by clicking here.  Believe me.  You’ll be glad you did.

  1. what do they charge?

  2. Thanks, I signed up but cannot find where to put in the coupon code for the free visit. Is there a charge for speaking with a provider and how does this work?

    • Hi Karen! Great questions.

You are not charged until right before you talk to the provider. So, since you have already signed up, the coupon code is good for the next year! Good news, right? (And subsequently, you enter the coupon code right before you speak to a chosen provider.)

There is a charge for speaking with a provider (for visits following your free one). It is $50 to speak with a doctor and $25 to speak with a nutritionist. I’ll add this info to my post! Let me know if you have any other questions.
