Book Review: From Scratch

Today I am excited to bring you a review for the book From Scratch written by the lovely and talented Shaye Elliot of the blog The Elliot Homestead.  Do you follow her blog already?  You probably do and if you don’t, you should.  She and her family live in the northwest and run their very own homestead.  She is currently trying to get her dairy cow pregnant.  It is pretty hilarious.

The first thing that struck me about Shaye’s book is the photography.   I’m a sucker for pretty pictures and this book definitely has them.  Each recipe includes a photograph of what the end result should look like.  I appreciate that.

The book is also more than just recipes.  In it she discusses traditional cooking principles and why she uses them when cooking for her family.  She talks about how to stock your kitchen to successfully prepare the recipes in her book and to cook from scratch, in general.

Shaye has successfully given you the building blocks for a healthy, from scratch, diet as well as a plan for how you are going to do it.

Some of the recipes that I am most excited to make include:
  • soaked granola
  • protein bars
  • wheat crackers with sea salt and rosemary
  • portobello mushrooms with quinoa
Shaye also includes recipes for staple items such as:
  • breads made with sourdough
  • mayonnaise
  • salad dressing

One of the best things about From Scratch is that you can choose the format that you prefer.  She is selling it both in hard copy format, as well as ebook format.  Personally, when it comes to cookbooks, I much prefer a hard copy format.  Bringing my iPad into the kitchen is NEVER a good idea.

You can buy the hard copy version here from Amazon (on sale for $15 right now!) or the ebook version here from e-junkie.

Other questions about the cookbook before you shell out the big bucks for it?  Go ahead and ask.  I’ll try to answer them for you.
