Pantry Revamp: Sourdough Bread

Sourdough bread is a fermented food – .  I’m just beginning to learn about fermented foods and their health benefits.  From everything I’ve read, I can only improve my health by adding more of them to my diet.

I am no scientist, but this what I’ve gathered so far.  Sourdough bread lasts longer than typical bread.  It pre-digests starches, which makes it easier for US to digest.  It also breaks down gluten, which can make it easier on gluten intolerant people.   The lactic acid fermentation that takes place during the production of sourdough bread increases the nutrients that are available for our body to absorb.  If you want to read some better written articles about why sourdough is good for you, here are two:

My mom recently started making sourdough and asked me if I was interested in some of her extra starter so that I could make my own.  I said absolutely!

Here is a link to the first recipe that I tried:   Extra-Tangy Sourdough Bread –

Starter goes in the bowl. 
Starter, water, 3 cups of flour.
After 12 hours in the fridge.
Salt and remaining flour added to mixture, then kneaded.
Shaped in loaves and ready for another rise
Risen again and ready for the oven.
Baked!  Probably could have used another 5 minutes in the oven but still DELICIOUS!

      It looks like it turned out well. I’ve not made sourdough bread before either. But with the starter and all it sounds similar to the Amish friendship bread. The starter just keeps going and going. I eventually got tired of it, but found out later I could have frozen the starter until I needed it again. I’m sure you can do something similar with the sourdough starter. Otherwise you may exhaust yourself.

      A friend gave me sourdough starter a few weeks ago and I’ve been using it every week (while saving back 1/4 of a cup for next batches). It’s soooo good! I let mine sit out vs. sticking it in the fridge though. I’m excited to try new recipes (just done the recipe the Cultures for Health Recipe). The family and I love it toasted with butter on it. Not too sure about it for sandwich bread though.

        Mine is a bit thick, too…. but about what I expected it to be. Stay tuned – tomorrow I have the MOST AMAZING sourdough english muffin recipe. They are the best and not thick at all

      So excited about trying this and the english muffins! They look awesome. Any way for you to double your starter and sell it?…I’d gladly pay you for it! I don’t know if that’s even possible. I’ve only done the amish friendship bread when it comes to starters.

        Hi Elisa! I will gladly, GLADLY, give you some. You will certainly not pay me! In fact, once a week I either have to make something, throw away half the starter, or give it to someone else. That is just how it works because you have to “feed” it at least once a week. Anyhow, I’ll be happy to give you some and then you can start your own! Fun!
