As you know from my Pantry Revamp series, I am trying to increase the homemade foods that we consume in our house.  I want to cut out all processed foods and work with only whole ingredients.  If you want to eat “real” food, you have to know how to cook.  You have to get in the kitchen and do the work.  This book will help you (and me!) do just that.

When I signed up to review the book and introduce it to my readers, I had no idea I was going to enjoy it so much and find so many great recipes inside.  However, as Lindsey says, the book is about more than just recipes.  It is also about how to find and use quality ingredients, teaches you much about basic cooking techniques, and helps increase your understanding of combining flavors in food (particularly flavors OTHER than salty and sweet, which we have become so accustomed to tasting in the American diet).

Lindsey does a great job of making sure that her reader understands all of the cooking techniques that are necessary to complete each of her recipes.   Of particular interest to me was the section on fermentation, in which she talks about the what, why and how of fermenting.  I also enjoyed the do’s and don’ts section on herbs and spices.  As Lindsey suggests, this book should be seen as more than a recipe book.  With all the extras, reading this book can be likened to standing in the kitchen and learning to cook from your grandmother.

Then you get to the recipes.  Most of them include pictures (which is important to me in a cookbook) and all of them include thorough instructions that will help make your dish turn out just as beautiful as Lindsey’s.  I was also pleased that most of the ingredients are items that are easy to locate and inexpensive.  I get frustrated when “healthy” cookbooks include lists of ingredients that are a mile long, can only be purchased at a specialty store, and will cost me a small fortune.
