We got a new coop for the chicks this weekend and now we are starting the process of hardening off. (Just like you do for seedlings, but for chickens! The point is to help them learn to regulate their temperature after being indoors and under a heat lamp. It also helps them develop the proper feathers to deal with the weather.) We'll start by putting them in there for longer and longer periods during the day and eventually let them spend the night in there. Though not this week. According to the weather reports, we're in for another cold snap.
Here are some photos from their first introduction to the new coop.

In they go and Beta stands guard.
Aww they look so little in there. They grow so fast though and then the wonderful eggs.
ReplyDeleteThey already seem so big too me! But yes... they really are still so little. I cannot wait for the eggs!
DeleteVery neat, and such a great learning experience for the kids, too!
ReplyDeleteYes. We know it isn't going to save us (or make us) any money in the long run, but it is a great experience for the kids.
DeleteI have couple of questions if you can please answer? Where do you order the coop, and how many can you keep? Will the rooster be also there?
ReplyDeleteThere are tons of places you can get coops from, especially online. We got ours locally at a feed store called "The Western Ranchman." You can also make them pretty easily. As for the rooster, we don't have one :) First, it would be illegal to have rooster within city limits and second, we don't want fertile eggs, so we really don't have a need for one.
DeleteHope this answers your questions! Thanks for stopping by!
How exciting! I love having baby chicks. I'm getting chick fever! I love how you referred to it as "hardening them off." I've never thought of it that way, but it's the perfect way to describe it. Such cute photos of your kids with the chicks :)
